Appalachian Trail

Appalachian Trail

I hiked the Appalachian Trail northbound in 2016 and kicked off a lifetime of adventure with a bang. This hiking trail stretches approximately 2,200 miles along the Eastern US from Georgia to Maine and is one of the premier backpacking experiences in North America. Over 5 months, I would crest peaks, soak in mud, and meet all kinds of wild types.

TransAmerica Trail

TransAmerica Trail

In 2017, I suited up my bicycle to tour the USA coast to coast. I chose the TransAmerica Trail for this mad pursuit, a 4,200 mile path from Yorktown, Virginia to Astoria, Oregon (with a prelude in NY and PA). I saw a wide cut of the middle of the country and some of the most beautiful places within, all while blasting up and down hills fully loaded and tent camping at night. Some photos here are among my true favorites; there's some interesting stuff one can only witness from two wheels!

HFM Wandering

HFM Wandering

In 2018, I set out on what may have been my most ambitious adventure thus far; six months of wandering the states, from coast to coast and back. Caveats? Plenty. Shoestring budget. No car, nor flights. Only ground transit, rideshares or my trusty bicycle. Lastly, there was no fixed itinerary as I made my way from NYC to LA and back. What a free, explorative period! I made sure to try and spend up to a week in various locales to soak up as many disparate vibes I could find, and was contented with the results in my writing and photography. Boy, was I sad when this one ended!

Pandemic Road Trip

Pandemic Road Trip

In the shadow of 2020's COVID outbreak, I made due with the troubled setting by moseying around the American West on a month long road trip. This time with actual wheels; my own hatchback. I learned what it meant to live out of my vehicle, while visiting some of the most beautiful National Parks and staying the hell away from other people while sating my need to explore.

Pacific Crest Trail

Pacific Crest Trail

In July 2021, I attempted a Southbound thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,650 mile trail from Canada to Mexico along the rugged interiors of Washington, Oregon, and California. Sadly, I only made it to Southern Oregon before widespread forest fires closed the trail down.

Arizona Trail

Arizona Trail

In Autumn 2021, I pivoted off the Pacific Crest Trail to hike the 800 mile Arizona Trail. I started in Utah and made my way down to Mexico through the mountainous interior. It was a cool way to see my new home state and a nice two month journey.

HFM Goes Global

HFM Goes Global

In 2023, I've opted to try living digital nomad far away from life in North America. Here's that story in chronological order by country.

A Cycle Across Japan

A Cycle Across Japan

In spring 2025, I bicycled across Japan's mainland from south to north. It started in Kyushu's southern end near the volcano Sakurajima, and went to the far north of Hokkaido 20 miles from the border with Russia.
